Description

I used :iconnormalization:'s Ireland OC before anyone asks. XD

Yes, I am an American-born American living in the United States of America! So why didn't I draw America in the mix? Well, if I am asked "What's your heritage?" in real life, "American" is already assumed. Plus Americans are from everywhere, nation of immigrants, it seemed weird to include him. So I hope me in my pseudo-bomber jacket is close enough for you lol.

Otherwise I am Italian on my mother's side (all from southern provinces) and German and Irish from my father.

--~*extended edition*~--

That's the easy answer, but depending on my mood I answer differently. It changes because of my flexible definition of 'ethnicity' and desire to explain. You can stop reading if you want.

My father was adopted. We know that his biological parents were German and Irish. But the exact heritage of my grandparents (the ones who adopted him) is rather fuzzy. We aren't really sure where their families are ultimately from; that information didn't make it down the lines and the family history has become a mystery. ): Our last name is a six-letter one-syllable surname that looks like a misspelled German surname, but we ignore half the letters and pronounce it like it's English. I was told at one point it was Danish but lol I have no clue. Lately I include this cultural side of my family in my response to "What are you?" because I have all their blended American ethnic influences with me along with my blended Italian-American culture. So I will either blanket over the unsurity and generalize us as either American (cheap easy escapist answer) or German. In the words of my father, "We are very Dutchy," but by this he means Pennsylvania Dutch, which basically means German, not Dutch as in the Netherlands. Pennsylvania Dutch doesn't just mean the Amish, either. Generally speaking it refers to the early German-speaking settlers in PA. So I could have Swiss ancestors, we don't know. I should research this more.

But, eh. In pondering I think adoption complicates the answer (do you claim biological roots or the culture that you grew up in?), but it's about the same as thinking, well, after the immigrant generation, is the next generation American? What is American? What is (for example) Italian? Can the American-born third generation still claim to be Italian-American or are they just American? Where is the line and does it matter et cetera et cetera, and the same with other countries and ethnicities all around the world. Maybe I am just over-thinking. I find this type of thought fascinating, though.
